Synopsis: Tony Delmarco is a New York homicide detective who gets transferred to Hollywood, CA in the mid 1930’s. His very first job is the murder of an up and coming Hollywood Starlet, Jessica Paige. Tony soon realizes that this murder case is not like any other. He first goes and meets with Jessica’s roommate, Laura Taylor, and instantly is attracted to her. Laura is a mysterious girl who is holding back. Laura leads Tony to Boris, Jessica’s producer on what was to be her first film role. Boris is a tough man who warns Tony not to stick his nose in where it doesn’t belong. Like most detectives, Tony doesn’t listen to the advice and moves on to uncover the secret to this murder.
Tony meets up with John Kellor, Jessica’s agent, and Felicia Kelly, Jessica’s friend. Felicia is a bubbly sweet girl who seems to want to help, but has no real useful information to give. Kellor is a busy man who seems to be more interested in banging his clients then in booking them paying gigs. It isn’t until Tony goes back to Jessica’s apartment and searches through her room before he gets his first big break. He finds Boris’s business card with a note on the back that reads, “Kitty Kat Klub.” When Tony confronts Boris about this, Boris flies into a rage and punches Tony. Boris again tells him that if he knows what’s good for him that he’ll leave it alone. On the way out of his meeting with Boris, Roberta Hastings (Boris’s personal assistant) stops Tony and tells him that if he wants to know about the “Kitty Kat Klub” then he should meet her later that night. When Tony meets with Roberta, she explains that the Kitty Kat Klub was a gentleman’s service provided by Boris. Jessica worked there, as does Laura.
Tony goes to question Laura about her work at the club and in the middle of a huge argument, they sleep together. The next day, Tony wakes up to find Laura gone but a note on her pillow that reads “If you want answers talk to John Kellor.” Tony corners John Kellor in a studio parking lot and forces him to spill the truth. Kellor admits to being in love with Jessica and that he wanted her to leave the Kitty Kat Klub. Kellor says, “I didn’t kill her. If I was going to kill anyone it’d be that producer, Boris.” Tony asks Kellor if he saw Jessica the night she died and Kellor replies, “Yes. She came to my house and told me that she was on her way to quitting the club. She looked so beautiful in her white dress and her daisy necklace on.” It’s at this moment Tony remembers something and dashes out. Tony knocks on a door and it opens to reveal Felicia Kelly. “How long did it take you to figure it out?” she asks. Felicia tells the detective that she didn’t kill Jessica because she was in love with Jessica. Felicia gives an emotional account of one night of passion they had shared together. Felicia asks the detective how he knew to come back to her and he tells her that Jessica was wearing a daisy necklace the night she died and that it wasn’t on her body when she was found. The detective saw Felicia wearing it the day he talked to her. Felicia tells him that Jessica stopped by her place to give her something for safekeeping. Felicia retrieves the letter and the detective reads it. Suddenly, all the pieces fit together and Tony knows who the real killer is. Tony needs Laura’s help to trap the killer. Before the night is over, two people will be dead and two more surprises unleashed that will rock Tony to his core.
Awards Campaign:
Ben Affleck has done it again. When the audience first starts out in the film they believe they are watching to try and solve the mystery of who killed Jessica Paige when in reality they are trying to solve two mysteries: who killed Jessica Paige and what secret is Laura Taylor hiding? Clues are given through out the film to both mysteries but the genius here is that the audience is so focused on trying to figure out who the killer is that they more than likely look past all the clues to Laura’s secret. This film is a stylish noir in the vain of “Laura” and “Chinatown.” Ben Affleck does a remarkable job as the hard-nosed detective trying to locate a killer. Jessica Chastain is a true revelation in the role of Laura Taylor. It isn’t until her secret is revealed that the audience can finally see how much acting talent went into bringing her character to the screen. If Chastain doesn’t have Oscar smitten then true acting talent is being over looked. Standouts in supporting roles are Anne Hathaway as the actress who longs for the love of her dead friend and Frank Langella as the no nonsense film producer who will stop at nothing to keep his secrets intact. This is the role of Langella’s career. The role that shouldn’t be missed or overlooked is Roberta Hastings. Sally Kirkland is finally given a juicy, meaty role and she sinks her teeth into it. When the film reaches it’s climax and Roberta’s true intentions are revealed, Miss Kirkland delivers the years standout supporting performance. If you loved “Chinatown” or if you loved “Laura,” then don’t miss “Hollywood Glamour.” Be warned though; don’t reveal its secrets to anyone. Can you see behind the Hollywood Glamour and figure it all out?
