Synopsis:
in the belly of a black hawk helicopter, where space is tight and every second matters, a battle is being waged to save a life. This is a daily occurance for the unsung heroes of the US Military. Erin (Bell) is on her third tour of duty in Afghanistan in one of the most stressful and demanding jobs in the United States Military; a Crew Chief in the All-American DUSTOFF MedEvac company. The company flies into combat zones to rescue injured soldiers in unarmed helicopters and the medical staff on board tries to stabilize the victims as they are transported through dangerous skies to the nearest hospital. Erin's team consists of four other members. Dustin (Jordan) is a young medic on his first tour of duty whose partner Simone (Laurent) is a friend of Erin's and also on her third tour of duty. The attractive and sometimes cocky Grant (Parrish) is the nurse who assists Erin, Simone, and Dustin while in the air. The helicopter is piloted by Maria (Mara) a young, plucky and talented airwoman.
The team had just returned to their base in Kabul, Afghanistan when they received an urgent call for help from a German platoon who had been attacked by rebels on the Kabul-Kandahar Highway, a road in Afghanistan that is considered by many to be the most dangerous road in the world. The company flies out and rush to rescue the two injured German soldiers and get them safely up into the helicopter. However, Simone, Erin, and Grant are having difficulty loading them into the helicopter, so Marie tries to assist by landing. The medics and nurse step back, but as soon as the helicopter touches the ground, a land mine explodes underneath it, blowing up the helicopter and sending fragments of metal in all directions. Maria and the two german soldiers are killed instantly and while none of the others are seriously injured, they're trapped on the most dangerous road in the world without weapons. Erin tries to contact base, but they are out of range.
The only option is for the four of them to travel down the road and try and find a town with a telephone. Walking off the road isn't an option as land mines could be anywhere. The company is forced to walk on the road, with no idea of where the nearest town is. After about five miles of walking, Erin spots a truck coming towards them. She tells her partners that they have to hide to make sure it's safe and not rebels who should shoot them all dead on the spot. Dustin and Simone agree, but Grant wants to get out of there, and proceeds to run down the center of the road, right at the truck. The truck stops and Grant yells to them, explaining what went on. A man gets out of the car and Grant walks towards him to shake his hand, but as he nears him the man screams and the car blows up.
Dustin is crying and Simone tries to console him as Erin desperately looks to get a signal on her radio. After the car explosion, the three remaining company members had run off into the dessert, realizing they couldn't walk on the road anymore, it was just as dangerous as the land mine peppered land. They have no food, little water, and no sense of where to go. Dustin is ready to give up, but Erin won't let anybody else die, and vows to find a way to get the surviving members of her company off this hellish highway and back to base, no matter the cost.

Sam Mendes has long been known for creating whole worlds on film. He can draw the most incredible performances out of actors, and he knows just the tone to use in each and every story he tells. "Angels In Hell" is a harrowing tale of survival and sanity during wartime, as well as a successful character study. Kristen Bell plays Erin, a mother of two on her third tour in Afghanistan as a piece of a MedEvac company. Bell is astoundingly good in this dramatic turn as a leader who finds herself thrust into a world in which she doesn't know how to lead. Her companions are the devilishly handsome Grant (a wonderfully comedic turn from Hunter Parrish), the stoic but motherly Simone (a spectacularly nuanced performance from Melanie Laurent), the impish pilot Marie (a plucky Kate Mara), and the young and unprepared Dustin (a fantastic Michael B. Jordan). Together, this is one of the years most dynamic and unexpected ensembles which brings together actors from TV, indies, awards contenders, and blockbusters to create a full spectrum of real human characters who are easy for anyone to identify with. "Angels In Hell" starts with the daily lives of these five while in the field; from saving lives to the 4-5 hour helicopter rides they take together, giving them time to talk and bond. After a catastrophic event, four of the company members are stranded in one of the most dangerous places in the world, where thieves, terrorists, rebels, and murderers are all common sights. Mendes has created a daring film that has more to do with the experience of being one of these MedEvac men and women, then the tragedy at the films core. Kristen Bell is a strong, powerful leading lady, and the film should certainly be remembered come oscar time, if not for anything else, for her bold performance.
